Club Information

Where does the name "Pottawattomie" come from?

The club is named for an Indian Tribe, originally known as Potawatanub├▒k or Potawagani├▒ (i. e. “People of the place of the fire”) who migrated to the Great Lakes area in the 1600’s from the Eastern US. By the beginning of the 19th century, the Pottawattomie were in possession of the country around the head of Lake Michigan, from Milwaukee River in Wisconsin to Grand River in Michigan, extending southwest over a large part of northern Illinois, east across Michigan to Lake Erie, and south in Indiana to the Wabash River. Within this territory they had about 50 villages, with at least two of those villages located nearby the current site of Pottawattomie Country Club.
